The Brighthorse Prize is an annual book award honoring unpublished novels, collections of short fiction, and poetry collections. Three prizes are awarded each year. Authors writing in English—regardless of nationality, residence, or publication history—may submit to the competition.

The Brighthorse Prize in Short Fiction offers an award of $1000 and publication by Brighthorse Books with our standard 50/50 royalty split. In addition to publishing the winners, the press may also offer to publish other manuscripts submitted to the competition.

Please note that these guidelines have been updated. The new deadline for submissions is October 1. Writers will be notified of the results on December 1st. Winning manuscripts will be published in the first quarter of the following year.

Authors writing in English, regardless of nationality, residence, or publication history may submit to the competition.

Eligible manuscripts are limited to unpublished collections of short fiction.

Submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published as a whole, though individual stories within the full manuscript may have been published, as long as the writer retains copyright.

Authors of manuscripts accepted by another publisher while under consideration for the Brighthorse Prize are asked to withdraw them from the competition by emailing the Press. Entry fees cannot be refunded.

No Brighthorse staff member, board member, or volunteer may enter the competition.

Failure to comply with these guidelines may disqualify the entry.

Only book-length manuscripts will be considered. We leave the definition of "book-length" to the writer. Some collections are meant to be small, some larger. If it's any help, AWP suggests a length of 150-300 pages for collections of short fiction, but this is a ballpark figure.

All submitted manuscripts must be composed in black 12 pt. standard font. Fiction should be double-spaced, and the margins should be about 1" all around. Do not include a cover, photographs, drawings, or illustrations of any kind.

Files formatted as .doc or .docx are easiest for us, but we can also handle pdf, txt, rtf, wpf, odt, and wpd.

Please make sure the pages of your manuscript are numbered and that the author’s name does not appear on the title page, in headers or footers, or anywhere else. Please do not include a list of publication credits in the manuscript. Submissions containing manuscripts that identify the author in any way other than in the form boxes of the submission manager will be disqualified.

We use Submittable to accept and review our submissions.
