The Brighthorse Book Prize is an annual awards series honoring unpublished novels, collections of short fiction, and poetry collections. Three prizes will be given in 2018. Authors writing in English—regardless of nationality, residence, or publication history—may submit to the competition. Winning manuscripts will be published by Brighthorse Books under the press’s standard contract. (After production costs are recovered, we share profits 50/50 with the writer.) The editors reserve the right to offer to publish any manuscripts submitted to the competition.

The Brighthorse Prize in Poetry offers an award of $1000 and publication. National distribution and promotion.

Submission Guidelines

Winners will be contacted directly and will be announced on our web site by October 1st. Writers who have submitted to the contests will receive emailed notifications of the winners. We are unable to report on the status of individual submissions and cannot provide feedback on individual submissions.

Eligibility Requirements

Authors writing in English, regardless of nationality, residence, or publication history may submit to the competition.

Eligible manuscripts are limited to unpublished collections of poetry (may be a collection or a single long poem).

Submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published as a whole, though individual works within the full manuscript may have been published, as long as the writer retains copyright.

Authors of manuscripts accepted by another publisher while under consideration for the Brighthorse Prize are asked to withdraw them from the competition by emailing the Press. Entry fees cannot be refunded.

No Brighthorse staff member, board member, or volunteer may enter the competition.

Failure to comply with these guidelines may disqualify the entry.

Formatting Requirements

Only book-length manuscripts will be considered. We leave the definition of "book-length" to the writer. Some collections are meant to be small, some larger.

All submitted manuscripts must be composed in black 12 pt. standard font. Poetry may be single- or double-spaced, and the margins may be adjusted accordingly. Do not include a cover, photographs, drawings, or illustrations of any kind.

Uploading as .doc or .docx is easiest for us, but we can also accept pdf, txt, rtf, wpf, odt, and wpd.

Please make sure the pages of your manuscript are numbered and that the author’s name does not appear on the title page, in headers or footers, or anywhere else. Please do not include a list of publication credits.Submissions containing information that identifies the author in any way other than in the form boxes of the submission manager will be disqualified.
